📖 Our Story
For years, Alley straightened her curls — not because she wanted to, but because no one around her knew how to care for them.
Growing up in a Puerto Rican family where straight hair was the norm, her curls were a mystery. It wasn't until a radio ad caught her ear on a drive to college — "Love hair? Want to make people feel their best?" — that something clicked.
She moved to Portland in 2012 and quickly discovered she wasn't alone. Talented stylists struggled with textured hair because beauty schools simply hadn't taught them. Clients were driving from Eugene, Seattle, and the Oregon Coast just to find someone who understood their curls. Many didn't even know they had curly hair — years of damage and dismissal had convinced them their texture was "just frizzy."
Your Curlfriend was born in 2014 from that gap — and from the belief that curly hair expertise should be the standard, not the exception.
After years of building that mission one curl at a time, in Spring 2026 we're opening our first dedicated salon space: 980 square feet in Portland's Hillsdale neighborhood — a sensory-safe, education-first community hub designed to be the space younger Alley always wished existed.
Because every curl deserves a curlfriend.
